FT partner, Wilson Torrens, recently spent some time in the company of Donal Doherty (Manager of Harry’s Shack) to get an insight into their business.
Donal commented, “Back in late 2013 we were brought to look at the National Trust building here on Portstewart Strand and were blown away by the location right on the sand of this beautiful North Coast. We had identified the coast as somewhere to expand our operations from our existing base in Donegal. This site had everything we dreamed of including amazing views, the potential for so much light inside, a perfect size and maybe the most amazing outside seating area in Northern Ireland. Our expertise in fresh local fish in particular and the casual approach to our Shack and its BYO policy have proven a winner for morning coffee lovers and evening lobster lovers. Tourism on the North Coast still has huge potential and we are very excited to be thinking of further developments on this site with our partners, the National Trust. We are already seeing amazing winter trade as well as the expected summer rush. We never expected to be so busy, nor win the praises of top UK critics such as Jay Rayner. To top it all off, we just recently picked up "Best Restaurant in Northern Ireland" at the Restaurant Magazine Awards in London after just 10 months open. The beach location brings magic to our food. People travel from all over the province and from overseas to eat here, that shows you the potential and magic of this coast and we look forward to adding more and serving here for years to come.”
